¿What is a Heart Safe School?
A Heart Safe School is the one which has semi-automatic external defibrillators easily accessible to first responders, to achieve defibrillation before the maximum recommended time has elapsed since the cardiac arrest has occurred.
A cardiac arrest is often an unexpected and sudden event that can happen to anyone, anytime, and anywhere.
Up to 30,000 cardiac arrests occur every year in Spain. That is one cardiac arrest every 20 minutes. In fact, the incidence of sudden cardiac death is nearly 4 times higher than the incidence of car accident death. More than 85% of sudden death are due to cardiac arrest, 90% of them take place in extra-hospital environments and only about 5% survive without sequelae.
The only way to improve the chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest is a quick and appropriate treatment through a correct cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and therefore the need of a fast and easy access to the Semi-automatic external defibrillators (SAED).
Combined with CPR, the public access of an SAED to laypersons able to provide assistance to the victim within the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest is essential to increase the likelihood of resuscitation
¿What is a SAED?
The semi-automatic external defibrillator (SAED) is a portable electronic device (health product) that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation (the heart has electrical activity but mechanical quiescence) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (the heart beats too fast to effectively pump blood) and is able to treat the cardiac arrest through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
Platero Green School has a SAED on its premises and its staff are trained in SAED use and CPR.
